The crown jewel of Carefree and an amazing oasis in the desert, the Carefree Desert Gardens is located along pedestrian-friendly Easy Street in downtown Carefree, AZ. The Gardens are FREE to access, and are open 365 days a year.
The Carefree Desert Gardens are home to the Carefree Sundial, one of the largest of its kind in the world. This 62 foot long, 25 foot high monument defines the life style in Carefree, where we count all the sunny days in style, and leave the dark days behind.
The Carefree Desert Gardens includes a play area and splash pad for kids, as well as, pet stations for your dog.
The Carefree Sundial, the largest in North America, stands as a remarkable piece of public art and engineering. Stretching 62 feet in length and towering 35 feet above the ground, it was commissioned by K.T. Palmer, one of Carefree's founders, and designed by solar engineer Dr. John Yellott and architect Joe Wong. The sundial’s metal gnomon (the shadow-casting arm) points directly to the North Star, adding a celestial touch to its design. A must-see landmark in Carefree, the sundial not only serves as a functional timepiece but also as a striking tribute to the town's artistic and innovative spirit.
